Class Descriptions

Toddler & Preschool Dance, Kindergarten  Dance

Ages 8 years and up

Adult


Preschool Dance  3 & 4 year olds

Preschool Dance Ages 3-4 is an introduction to dance.  The primary goal is to foster a love of movement.  The creative component is quite large.  Taking part in dancing out a narrative helps children to understand that dancing is expression.  It is a means of  communicating feelings and actions.  The vocabulary covered in Preschool Dance  is all steps which a 3 year old can master and they build self-confidence. 

Pre-Ballet Basics 5 to 7 year olds

Beginning ballet for the very youngest students incorporating creativity and metaphors that will delight and intrigue this energetic age.  Basic elements such as stretching and flexibility, pointing and flexing, positions of the feet and arms, large and small loco motor skills and center work will be explored as well as basic ballet terminology.  Lessons are geared to allow students to feel comfortable in the dance studio setting while learning the elements and rules of dance.

  
Creative / Movement 5 to 7 year olds

This energetic class is for children who  want a  faster paced class than Pre-Ballet Basics. This class  focuses on an introduction to jazz and the coordination required for  hip hop movements with the physical development of a 5 to 7  year old in mind.

Ballet 

Learn the basics of ballet including barre, center, movement across the floor as well as positions of the stage and ballet terminology.  Stretching, flexibility, posture and poise as well as knowledge of the theatre stage and the components of a performance will be highlighted.  Elements of the history of dance, choreographers and popular ballets will be included.  This class is suitable for all ages and will be taught in appropriate age groups.

Musical Theatre Dance

Musical Theatre Dance  is a high energy dance class featuring choreography from and in the style of Broadway shows and movie musicals.  Many musicals will be explored in the class, culminating in an end of the year recital with productions from Hairspray, Wicked, and High School Musical, among others. This class is suitable for all ages and will be taught in appropriate age groups. (Dancers experience is heightened if coupled with Jazz / Modern). 

Tap

The basics of tap and tap skills will be incorporated into this class including barre, center work and loco motor movements.  Students will learn about historical figures in tap as well as tap terminology. This class is suitable for all ages and will be taught in appropriate age groups.

Jazz 

This class is designed to encourage the student to gain kinetic and intellectual knowledge of their bodies in a technical dance environment that involves the integration of various rhythmic concepts, dynamic expression and spatial awareness. Students develop the ability to move through space in various floor patterns using basic loco motor steps integrated with rhythmic elements. This class is suitable for all ages and will be taught in appropriate age groups. 

Hip Hop

Hip Hop is a fast, high energy type of dance seen in music videos and commercials.  Dance moves seen in performances by artists such as Beyonce, Justin Timberlake and J Lo would be typical examples of Hip Hop. This class is suitable for all ages and will be taught in appropriate age groups.

Modern 

Modern dance is rooted in self expression. The fundamental opposite of ballet, modern dance focuses on the use of breath and weight. Dancers rarely use the barre and dance in bare feet to find a sense of grounding and strength. Incorporating the techniques of Lester Horton, Martha Graham, and post-modernism, dancers will develop their skills while also exploring improvisation and choreography.


Body Scultping & Toning

This is a great class to reintroduce the body to working out. The goal is to use individual body weight to work and tone specific areas of the body. The workouts focus on lower body one week and upper body the next with stretching and ab work every week. Some basic equipment may be required.

Hip Hop

Jazz / Hip Hop
